Dr. Jennifer Renick, an assistant professor of ecological and community psychology at Michigan State University, and postdoctoral scholar Dr. Brian Villa published an article in the National Network of Education Research-Practice Partnerships (NNERPP) Extra exploring how Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) can strengthen education-focused research-practice partnerships (RPP).
In the article, Dr. Villa highlights how YPAR positions young people as co-researchers who generate evidence to inform policies, programs, and school practices. He provides examples from a long-term RPP with San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), illustrating how youth-led research on topics such as student engagement and chronic absenteeism can be integrated into district structures and decision-making routines. The article also outlines practical considerations for RPPs seeking to incorporate youth perspectives more systematically and equitably.
